Nigeria gov't says has no plan to privatise refineries

Fri, 01/03/2014 - 08:23

By Felix Onuah ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has no plans to privatise the country's oil refineries, his spokesman said on Friday, contradicting a government pledge to do so last month. The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) said late last month that Jonathan had approved a plan to sell the refineries, which have a combined capacity of 445,000 barrels per day (bpd), but run far below capacity due to decades of mismanagement in Africa's top oil producer. "The government has no plans to sell any of the nation's four refineries, so it's not true that Mr President approved the sale," presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said by telephone. Abati declined to say whether Jonathan had changed his mind or whether the BPE statement had been incorrect.

Blame the likes of BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell for global warming ?

The Koch Brothers Are Still Trying to Break Wind (Op-Ed)

Thu, 01/02/2014 - 11:38
Elliott Negin is the director of news and commentary at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). As Congress dithers for the umpteenth time over extending a key subsidy for wind energy, the fate of the industry once again is up in the air. Given that the planet needs to transition as quickly as possible away from coal and natural gas to carbon-free energy to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, who would be against renewing wind's tax credit? Never mind the fact that the oil and gas industry has averaged — in federal tax breaks and subsidies — four times what the wind tax credit is worth, annually, for the last 95 years.
